REVIEW: "The Story of the Hundred Promises" by Neil Cochrane
"The Story of the Hundred Promises" by Neil Cochrane
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
(5/5 Stars)
SUMMARY:
Trans sailor Darragh Thorn has made a comfortable life for himself among people who love and accept him. Ten years after his exile from home, though, his sister asks him to reconcile with their ailing father. Determined to resolve his feelings rather than just survive them, Darragh sets off on a quest to find the one person who can heal a half-dead man: the mysterious enchanter who once gave him the magic he needed to become his true self. But so far as anyone knows, no one but Darragh has seen the enchanter for a century, and the fairy tales that survive about em give more cause for fear than hope.
In lush and evocative prose, and populated with magical trees and a wise fox, The Story of the Hundred Promises is a big-hearted fantasy suffused with queer optimism.
REVIEW:
What a stunning queer fairytale!
This was such an enjoyable read and I cannot wait for more people to discover and devour Darragh's story. I'm sure they'll fall in love with the characters as much as I have.
As for Queer representation; This is a literal GOLDMINE. We meet characters that are trans, agender, non-binary, aromantic etc. The list goes on :)
It is described as a loose re-telling of ”Beauty & The Beast”, and I can definitely see similarities between the two, but I don't think that's an accurate description. If you're looking for a romance (if you can call stockholm syndrome a love story, but that's another topic entirely...) novel with that in mind, this probably won't be the story you expect it to be.
---> Having said that; Even if it's not what you expect of desire it to be, It's a wonderful piece of literature and I would recommend anyone to read this! Though the story deals briefly with transphobia, they also live in a society where the use of neo pronouns is as normal as he, she or they.
Writing style; Stunning.
World Building; Stunning.
Did it make me cry out of happiness? Yes.
Did I want this to end? No.
Will I be reading Cochrane's other books? Yes.
Give it a read, you won't regret it!
Thank you so much to the publisher & Edelweiss+ for giving me a DRC in exchange for an honest review!
